Description

Awesomeness, I've completed this one pretty quickly.

So for a while now I've been trying to play out how Black Silhouette would look on Flash, and what would/would not work. Here is a quality control tester thing, where you can see how much effects will kill your computer. This gives me an idea as to what and how much effects I should add in the final product (and also to my upcoming project, which is a cinematic, animated graphic novel).

What you get to do is change Sayuri's eyebrows, mouth, and whether or not you want her mask on or off. I suggest you don't change these options when you get higher than "Low Effects" (you'll know why). The controls to the right of that change the quality of the image. To the right of that is a description of the effects, and under it is the frames per second count and previous/next buttons. The movie is set to 30 fps, so if you get around 20-30 fps, then you should be good. Anything lower, then it's DOING IT WRONG.

"High Effects" looks the best (well, aside from the impossible "Intense Effects"). However, it slows down my machine. "Low Effects" seems to work fine for me, but I have to run it on Medium quality to keep a steady frame rate. "Medium Effects" just looks ugly.

The style is that of what you saw earlier on that ridiculous "Dress Up Game"-- two tones, and an abuse to the black and shadows, while highlighting shiny things. I was shooting for something close to "Medium Effects" and "High Effects" with the glowing of the characters. It's a visual effect that's being abused by recent high-budget anime. Unfortunately, even the "fake" glowing lags up the animation. And in case you were counting, that's 18 individual hair strands that I had to hand animate. They took forever to do, and now they still look horrible. I'll try to fix that up next time.

After looking at the final product, I have to say, I'm rather impressed. The line art is much more original and to my style than my recent works, and it's definitely an improvement compared to that music video I animated a while back. I'm starting to get the hang of Illustrator and the stupid concepts in Flash. I should definitely make more practice pieces like this.

Comments are, of course, welcome. Let me know what effects work best on your system, and if you're that awesome, you'd let me know of ways to "cheat" the effects in the higher levels so that they don't murder computers and kittens.

GOOD NEWS! After doing a bunch of research and trying to learn the science behind all of this, I updated my Flash player to Flash Palyer 10, and it just boosted my frame rate a solid 10 more frames per second! Awesomeness. I might not have to ease down on the graphics anymore! I could give you a breakdown as to how it works, but it's rather complicated. Lol!

It all worked pretty well with 30 fps until I got to High, which averaged at 25 and then Intense dropped it down to 20-21 fps
